Very good interview Lisa.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - some of my best friends are SEOs and male, and I've been very fortunate to learn the industry supported by those guys. So on the general I believe that most men in this industry support the influx of intelligent females :o)

As Lisa mentioned, SEO-Chicks was created more in celebration of intelligent females in SEO - not as a gender segregation platform.

The other truth is that we work well together - male and female... aaah!

Hi,

Nice post.

I have been promoting websites for about 7 years now. Started out in 2000 and then did other things as well.

But yes, it feels good to see so many women getting into Internet marketing big time.

In India, it was quite an unknown field even 3-4 years back. But now it seems every 2nd person is into it.

I wish there were conferences held held closer home so that I could attend:(

Best regards
Ranjana

woha Ammon. Not saying that some woman haven't been prominent, all the names you mention have and still are prominent in this industry. What I am saying, and I think Kelvin was pointing out as well, is that it simply is more men than woman in this industry, it's a FACT. Can't really argue with that??! It's nothing negative, I assure you!

And seeing as I am in fact a woman =) I can make a statement whether it sometimes can be seen as a boys club. Which it can, nothing personally to you Ammon, cause you rock! But I have experienced the sideway glance and the not being taken seriously attitudes. It does happen, I don't get discuraged by it, far from it, but it happens.

And I must stress I am not saying we should get any extra points just for being a woman. I didn't get to Head of Search for simply being a woman =) I know my stuff, that's it =)

Obviously I am a bit biased here since I blog on the SEO Chicks site, but I don't think that any of us are denying that there have always been some high-profile women in this industry. I do think that we should be able to say that this is a male-dominated industry for the most part without being criticized for it. We're not saying it to start a fight or to torment all the poor men in the field by making them feel like oppressors. We're saying it because it's simply the truth right now.

We're saying it because it's simply the truth right now.

x-post to Ammon

I don't disagree with you, I think Danny Sullivan even went as far as to provide statistical proof how many of each gender presented as SES over the years.

However while there are plenty of high profile female SEOs like those you mentioned but at events like LondonSEO on Friday there was a obvivous gender bias. And it seems common in lot of UK firms as well?

Given circumstances like this do you think it's a strange question to ask one of the founders of a website called SEO chicks?

My question wasn't about the reality of search marketing more the perception of it.

When I saw that bit about "Some people assume that search engine marketing is a bit of an all boys club" I immediately found myself thinking, "Yeah, and some people also assume that SEO is about shoving lots of meta tags into a page".

Its the old "Ass-U-Me" thing.

Know who one of the first SEOs Danny ever recalls seeing around is? Yup, Jill Whalen. Know how long Shari Thurow has been in the biz? Kim Krause Berg? Diane V (actually a web developer, but she was in the first SEO forum when it still wasn't called SEO yet), Christine Churchill? Hell, I can keep going for at least another 50 names if I tried I think.

Anyone who assumes that women haven't been very prominent in the industry right from the start is pin-pointing a lack of experience and general knowledge of the biz.

What *is* new is the 'SEO ladette' culture that's started only in the past couple of years as an actual identity group. I like it. But then, I'm an SEO, and love to see change and adaptation. :o)
