7th Annual Winner of the SiteVisibility Trophy for “Best Digital Media Student” at University of Brighton Announced
SiteVisibility sponsors the Digital Media course at the University of Brighton and on 27th July we were delighted to announce Anna Fletcher is the 7th annual winner of the SiteVisibility trophy for “Best Student” and a cheque for £100.
A recent PwC report forecasts that the digital marketing sector will continue to enjoy the fastest (double digit) growth within the UK marketing industry. The Search and Social Media marketing disciplines are also growing rapidly and this has resulted in shortages of people with appropriate digital skills and experience both locally in Brighton and nationally within the marketing industry.
As any economist knows, increased demand naturally leads to increased prices. In our case, this means rising labour costs for businesses. Faced with this increase, owners of Marketing businesses have two choices: either recruit from competitors or grow their own talent.
Now, it’s unusual to find an experienced SEO worth her salt in the queue at the JobCentre, so recruitment often means poaching staff from competitors or others in the supply chain. That can have all sorts of negative consequences, not least the risk of one day finding yourself on the receiving end of recruitment calls. Because of this, for many years, SiteVisibility have adopted a preference for the more sustainable approach of growing its own SEO, Social Media and Paid Search talent.
As part of its Internet Marketing Training programme, which involves taking on and developing up to 3-4 new trainees per annum, SiteVisibility has for the last 7 years sponsored various Digital Marketing degree courses at the University of Brighton. We’re also big fans of the Sussex Internship Programme provided by Wired Sussex. We do this because it illustrates our commitment to nurturing talent; we’re able to help develop tomorrow’s high potential Search Marketers as well as talent spot the best for recruitment into our business. All good business sense.
Internet Marketing trainees at SiteVisibility receive intensive on-going “on the job” and formal training from more experienced peers who teach our proprietary Search methodologies. This enables trainees to rapidly progress into paid positions. SiteVisibility is a business where success and an eagerness to learn are rewarded with rapid career and salary progression, where within 18 months, salary expectations are usually in excess of £25k as results are achieved. In fact, one of our Trainees from 5 years ago is now on our Board as Creative Director (Kelvin Newman) which shows that the sky really is the limit.
There are many voices in the digital industry bemoaning skills shortages and salary inflation, however we believe that agencies and in-house teams in our industry can—and should—help solve the skills shortage problem ourselves by investing in training, developing and retaining our own talent. Employers, employees, students and the industry as a whole have plenty to gain and very little to lose.
We’re therefore delighted to support the University of Brighton’s Digital Media course and congratulate Anna on achieving further recognition of her hard work and excellent results; we’ve no doubt that a bright future awaits her and her classmates.
