It’s still making the headlines and we can’t help but add fuel to the 140 character fire.

When Twitter bought the search engine Summize back in July last year the Twitterverse was made infinitely more usable for everyone, but it still didn’t solve Twitters business model issue – the fact that they don’t have one.

Last week, this problem may have been solved when Workdigital piloted their Twitter JobSearch, a recruitment search engine that hunts for vacancies and job opportunities mentioned on the micro-blogging site, at Texas’s South by South West Interactive festival.

Of course this isn’t particularly new, recruitment sites such as our client Check4Jobs, as well as others – RecruitmentBlogs.com and UKRecruiter, have been Tweeting for months now and the current trend is a direct product of the foreboding recession clouds that loom over us. Fortunately Workdigital’s search service successfully organises and contextualises the vast amount of vocation information that’s posted everyday.

And this can not only help the unemployed Tweeters, but Twitter itself – with its serious lack of revenue. Now it can easily implement ad-supported search engine results pages giving Twitter the money making prospects it’s been looking for, without charging its users for the service or forcing advertising onto peoples profile pages.

So, is Workdigital’s JobSearch set to save Twitter and all of us from the global economic meltdown?

A few of you may have noticed a slowing of pace in the frequency on the blog updates during the last month. It’s not because we’re running out of things to say but because we’ve been beavering away on one of the most comprehensive [tag]white paper[/tag]s ever written on [tag]social media marketing[/tag].

I think I’m gonna need more highlighters – via flickr

We’re just putting the final touches to it now and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s available. But with all this talk of white papers it seemed to perfect opportunity to point some of the great white papers and PDF’s we’ve produced that you might find interesting.

Beginner’s Guide to Search – exactly what it says on the tin. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to getting your website in front of customers using search engines this is the place to start. Even if you think you know the basics of search engine marketing its worth going back to the basics every now and then.

Recruiter Search Marketing – far and away the most popular white paper we’ve ever produced. We’ve got some great success stories & experience in the [tag]job board[/tag] and recruitment sector and Damon has tried to encapsulate as much of that knowledge into an easy to digest guide to SEO for recruiters.

Social Media Marketing Guide – everyday more existing and potential clients are asking us what is social media and how they can use it to market their business, so we’ve written a plain English, jargon & hype free introduction to social media. It’s designed to bring you up to speed with all the latest technologies and quickly help you understand their potential.

e-Recruitment 2.0 – written a while ago, but still as useful today. A short two page document illustrating the direction the online recruitment sector is headed in. It’s essential reading for any job board owners or marketers working for recruitment agencies.

It’s not just our white papers we love, I’d defiantly recommend checking out the comprehensive guide to the global search marketing landscape from Multilingual SEO, Nixon Mcinnes’ ongoing guides to web marketing and [tag]Andy Beal[/tag]’s online reputation management piece.

If you are thinking about launching a [tag]job board[/tag], either as an offshoot of an existing site or from scratch, it’s vital you think about your marketing strategy long before the website goes live.

At Site Visibility, we’ve developed a bit of a specialism in the job board & [tag]e-recruitment[/tag] sector, so we thought we’d share some of our top tips marketing your job search site online.

Make Sure You Have a Niche – while companies like Monster and Fish4 might be household names in the UK some of the most profitable job boards have laser targeted niches. It’s not only because of competitive necessity but also to create a great unique selling point. Choose a specific job title, sub sector within an industry or location, the more exact your niche the better. But be careful not to go too small, it’s unlikely you’ll make much money out of www.personal-assistant-in-the-media-industry-in-swindon-jobs.com

Think About the Structure – you cannot underestimate the importance of your structure to the success of your website in the search engines. Bury an important job type ten clicks deep into the site and you’ll struggle to gain visibility. I’d also recommend doing some extensive keyword research prior to deciding your categories, there might be a type of job in your niche people are searching for in significant numbers to justify making it a category in it’s own right.

Site Maps Are Essential – a ‘browse by job sector’ or comprehensive site map are absolutely essential to ensure all your site is crawled by search engine spiders. Google is pretty sophisticated but it is not able to type in queries into a search box. If you can get to the page without typing what chance does a search engine have? It’s a helpful addition for human users as well, so there’s no excuse not too.

Add Valuable Content – there’s no reason to limit your content to merely listings of vacancies. You could very easily include content like a blog or articles about how to negotiate a pay rise or other job related topics. The benefits are threefold; firstly you’re providing a more valuable website to your visitors than your one dimensional competitors, secondly you’re adding keyword rich content to give the search engines a much clearer idea what your job board is about. The third benefit is the useful content on your site makes you much more link worthy.

Find Reputable Link Partners – it’s not easy but your website will need high quality one way links to rise up the rankings. Each website linking to you is seen as a vote of confidence in your company and the more reputable the source the greater the value in the eyes of the search engine. If there are trade bodies for your industry, sector publications or relevant university departments they should be top of your list.

It’s not easy to launch and promote a job board but with a clear marketing plan and well researched search marketing campaign you can quickly find your site beating more established competitors.

Recent figures from the latest Jobcentre Plus employer survey shows increasing numbers of employers with jobs to fill are turning to the internet in order to find job candidates

According to the latest annual survey, a 25% of all filled job vacancies were advertised online in 2006.

The proportion of overall vacancies that appeared online rose to 16 per cent, up from 12 per cent in 2004. Out of the 4,500 employers surveyed, 12.5% reported that they had posted job adverts online in the past 12 months.

The shift to online recruitment is also notable among those seeking new job opportunities. In one week in June, around 2.2 million job seekers carried out over 6 million searches on the Jobcentre Plus website.

Elsewhere in the report, it was revealed that the SME sector was the most active of recruiters. Firms with between 10 and 249 employees were responsible for 66% of all successfully filled job openings.

In the last year of the 3.97 million jobs advertised, over a 33% of them were advertised with Jobcentre Plus. Good news all round really for [tag]job board[/tag] owners and the [tag]online recruitment[/tag] sector.
